Thallan was born to an Ishgardian noble and a Highlander woman. After his father's disappearance, his mother, Elodie, took him on the job with her - that he was a 10 year old boy on the high seas with his pirate captain mother was simply a fact of life for Thallan from then on.His father's disappearance always haunted Elodie, and she would frequently venture off without her crew to search for him. This caught up with her eventually, and she disappeared, as well - what her fate is, Thallan has no idea, but by this point he had been on the ship long enough to step up as quartermaster and take over as Elodie's own quartermaster took over as captain.This was Thallan's life for many years, and he enjoyed his time with his "family" very much. It came to an end rather abruptly thanks to the coming of the Seventh Umbral Era and all that it entailed. Thallan's ship was destroyed by a stray shard of Dalamud, and all of its crew lost at sea.

Fortunately for Thallan, he survived, and was picked up by an expeditionary crew of the Students of Baldesion. As their ranks were reeling from the effects of the Umbral Calamity, and Thallan - eager to distract himself from the loss of his crew - quickly proved himself to be an excellent researcher, they saw fit to recruit him into their fold.Thallan eventually fell into a specialty, the research of Allagan tech and magic. It was this, and his affinity for magic, that led him into his calling as a summoner. In the years following the calamity, Thallan served the Students of Baldesion both as a researcher and protector in expeditions out of Old Sharlayan. Despite this, he never developed close friendships with any of his fellow Students; the losses he'd experienced both prior to the calamity and thanks to it had cut him too deeply, and he was reluctant to allow anyone else to get too close again.

If Thallan had thought his life free from momentous events, he was gravely mistaken. He pleaded for the chance to explore Silvertear Lake - he knew that the Garlean forces had harvested a great deal of Allagan technology and put it to use in the conflict leading up to the clash at Cartineau and the concurrent Calamity. His request granted, Thallan explored the ruins with a small team - though, foolishly, he went off on his own near nightfall.Whether it was something about Thallan himself or merely one of the Allagan artifacts on his person, he awoke Midgardsormr briefly from his slumber. The dragon sensed something odd in Thallan, something that intrigued him - or perhaps he simply felt as if Thallan could be put to use later thanks to his connections to Ishgard. Whatever his reasons, Midgardsormr used his power to unlock Thallan's latent Echo. The experience was physically traumatizing to the half-elezen, who came away from it greatly changed.
